Medals and Awards

For his valor, Wayne Caron was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart.  The medal of honor is a medal awarded by the president to any soldier who showed valor and courage on the battlefeild.  The purple heart is awarded to any soldier killed or wounded in combat.  On October 1, 1977 a navy destroyer was named after Caron, the USS Caron (DD 970).  The destroyer was decommissioned 24 years later on October 15, 2001.  A Marine clinic base, Camp Lejeune, in North Carolina, was also named for Wayne Caron.  Also, the Wayne Caron auditorium at Middleboro High School is dedicated after him in honor of his sacrifice.
